I am an Ex-RAF specialist linguist, with operational experience throughout Europe and French-speaking Africa.  I was based in Germany for 10 years, training German paratroopers, and spent another decade in Spain.

Following many years of overseas postings and deployments, I finished my military career as a French, Spanish and German teacher at the Defence School of Languages.  On discharge I became a journalist in military and education publications.

However, after 10 years of journalism I decided to return to teaching modern foreign languages, and now teach part-time at a grammar school and, when not in the classroom, tutoring teenagers.  Moreover, given my background in Latin and other languages, I am invariably the lead in teaching written English. 

I am an examiner for AQA and Edexcel at A Level and GCSE, and the iGCSE Board.

My lessons focus on assisting the development of ideas and arguments, that can be applied to exam questions.  I am adept at helping students with analytical skills, enabling them to showcase convincing judgements to examiners, as well as perfecting their exam structure.

I encourage engagement in my lessons and provide a space where students feel comfortable to ask questions.  Through praise and encouragement, I help students who are anxious or cannot grasp areas of their subjects.  I provide a plan of action for going forward and keep parents consulted on their child’s progress.  I set homework, to reenforce skills covered in the lessons and will mark and give feedback.

I teach online via Zoom.

The ability to experience each student’s progress at every stage is incredibly rewarding and a wonderful part of my role as a tutor.
